Conventions of indie rock
Indie rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock that originated in the UK in the 80s. Indie rock became its own genre when bands such as Nirvana became mainstream, since then however, it has developed into a very versatile genre. However, genre today is very blurred with the majority of music not solely conforming to the conventions given, but expanding outside them. As Abercrombie suggests the boundaries between genre are blurring, which is highly evident within the music industry.
We chose the indie rock due to our unfamiliarity, allowing us to look objectively at the genre conventions and we aim to apply them to our own video with being influenced by our own taste. While, also hopefully adding our own originality within it.
The conventions in an indie rock music video:
- Costume- Typically wear dark casual clothing such as leather jackets or jeans. The style seems to effortless and laid back while also being fashionable. Many adopt a "just woken up" look with messy hair and an outfit that looks like it has been thrown together. For example, the 1975.

- Facial expressions- When performing the typically look serious of in pain. Indie rock is not associated with fun, but rather heartbreak. It is typically used to express such emotional encounters, which we plan on incorporating within the narrative our our own music video. Evidence of this comes from Oasis in their music video for their song wonder wall.
- Props- Typically within Indie rock music video there is a performance element that includes the instruments in order to make the band look authentic. We will use such props to make it appear that we have an established and credible band.
- Camera angles and shots- Typically there are many shots of the band playing, often close ups of the lead singer. This is done in order to show a "star image"(Goodwin) as it is them who are audiences to the band. We will use many of these shots in our own music video, as well as exploring many others within a narrative aspect.
