Performance:
A performance music video focuses primarily feature the band or artist presenting their song to the audience. For bands it the video shows them playing the instruments and the singer lip syncing. This allows for artists to promote themselves to audiences creating a brand identity, allowing audiences to see what the band/artist would be like live. Performances can choreographed, This very popular for rock bands for example, Sum 41 used this for their song "Still Waiting"and indie artist Goyte used this for their one hit wonder "Somebody that i use to know".

Concept:
A concept music video is based upon a compilation of shots from one idea, they usually don't contain an explicit story line They are often are poly-semic (have multiple interpretations). Things within the video are usually symbolic. However, some can see these as being too random and do not complement the lyrics. An example, of this is Red Hot Chill Peppers video for "Californication" and Ed Sheeran's "Don't".
Narrative:
Narrative:
A narrative music video is one in which a stroyline is playing all the way through, usually following Todrov's theory of equilibrium. It is very good at displaying the lyrics and their meaning, they can be quite captivating.There are three types of narrative music video:
- Amplification- The plot may be slightly influenced by the lyrical content however it uses different themes to compliment the songs vibe.
- Disjunction- this is where the narrative holds very little relationship to the song and it quite arbitrary meaning random. Similar to a concept.
- Illustration- Where the narrative of the music video closely reflects the lyrics and their meaning.
An example, of a narrative music video is from logic the song 1-800. Whose title is the number of a suicide hotline and his video focuses on a young black youth struggling with a variety of issues.
